There is no definitive answer to your question, especially since there is also no definitive answer to how to determine whether someone is an active suicidal risk at any given time. This is something that takes a lot of clinical training.

However, that being said, it is possible to get some inkling of whether a person may be contemlatng suicide even if they deny any such thoughts. Actually, the first thing to look at is what is going on that makes the questioner think may be denying such thoughts when they are actually occurring.

When you say "classic" signs I am assuming that you are talking about typical signs of depression such as sadness, sleep and appetite disturbance, etc. But there are other warning signs such as giving away possessions, withdrawing from people, feelings of hopeless/helplessness, etc.

There are no hard and fast rules, but generally people contemplating suicide would much rather have an alternative. What I would suggest is that you share with the person your reasons for being concerned and offer to "be there" for them, which is really all you can do anyway. In the absence of overt acts or threats, there is nothing you can really do except reach out...and perhaps share your concerns with others...

Unfortunately, if a person is rational and unambivalently intent on suicide it is unlikely that they can be stopped. Fortunately most people ARE ambivalent and will respond to others reaching out. Listen hard for the "cry for help" and respond to it when you hear it. Be less concerned with the specifics of your response than the fact that you are responding.

What are some signs that someone is suicidal?

Sometimes suicidal people will state their suicide plans in an attempt to get help. Others will become withdrawn, avoid family and friends, appear depressed and engage in risky behaviors. A past history of suicide attempts indicated more possible suicide attempts. It's ok to ask someone if they are thinking about suicide and if they have a plan. Most suicidal people actually don't want to die. They want help. So often times a suicidal person will talk about suicide a lot. If they have the means to commit suicide that's a warning sign, such as a lot of pills, a knife, a gun. It's important to let them know that there is help out there for them.

How do you deal with suicidal thoughts?

I recommend talking to someone. If you're trying to identify if someone else is having suicidal thoughts, some signs include 1: Them seeming sad quite often 2: If they talk about death often If you are having these types of thoughts or someone else seems to be, get help for them or yourself. I hope you are doing okay. It'll get better. You may not care about a stranger saying this, but you are loved and needed. If you have gotten out of depression, I'm proud of you.
