Usually if the timing is off you will hear a knock or a ping. Somtimes it's even hard to start your car If the timing is late , you'll overheat and hesitate alot. If the timing is too far adavanced, excessivie idiling will occur and pre-ignition will exist.
If the timing is out by a lot, you will notice a lack in peformance or poor gas mileage.
The only reliable way is to hook the engine up to a timing light. This flashes a pulse of light everytime No1 spark plug fires. Shine it on the crank pulley and it will look like it is standing still.
Usually there are marks or notches on the pulley and crank case to indicate timing. Adjust it by turning the distributor body.
Most modern engines are computer controlled and there is no adjustment for ignition timing.
how can you tell if a timing belt is bad
what kind of nissan.. please email it's ttrung1979@yahoo.comand i can tell you
if the timing is off by 9 degrees at the timing belt, your in trouble... you would have bent all your valves..... if its off on the timing tabs then you need a timing light and turn the distributer until you get the desired timing..
Sometimes you can tell if you take the cover off but if you are alredy there you can replace it. Get a manual on your car to find out how to do it.
If your timing is off, it's most likely because of the timing belt. I had this problem when I changed my timing belt and took my car apart over 10 times. You have to be dead-on precise when fitting the timing belt. If you are off one notch your timing will be off. It's that precise.
if the timing belt breaks then yes it will throw the timing off.
if the timing plate was taken off then just take off the timing cover and there will be notches on the timing gears so u can time it from there
You would need to pull one of the covers off and look at its physical condition.
Please can you tell me where are the timing marks for vauxhall 1.9 diesel
YOU don't set the timing on a 96, its all computer controlled. If your timing is off then you have a problem somewhere else. So if you timing is truly off then what needs to be fixed is whats causing it to be off. The computer sets the timing based on feedback that it gets from different sensors on and around the motor. And secondly i don't understand how you could even know if the timing was off in that car. But my advice is, if you know the timing is off and its not throwing any trouble codes, take it to a dealer.
Take the valve cover off of one bank of cylinders, have someone turn the engine over, and watch to see if the cam is turning. If not, the timing chain or belt is broken.
its a belt and my dealer couldn't tell me when it needs to be changed, so off to another dealer who said its at 100,000miles but get the tension units changed.
