The best way is to send the vin number to Pontiac historical society (http:/www.phs-online.com) and, for a fee, they will send you information showing all the original equipment your exact vehicle had, and build specs for your year and model. If your formula still has the original engine, the last six digits of the vin number will be stamped on the front of the block (usually going upward) next to the timing cover on the passenger side between the balance and the water pump. The code will be 2 (Pontiac) N or L (Assembly plant, Norwood or Van Nuys) XXXXXX (X = last six digits of the vin number). The code is small, and hard to see. The front of the block must be very clean to have any chance of making it out. There is also a two letter code on the front of the block just below the passenger cylinder head. This code identifies the engine, go to: http://www.wallaceracing.com/engine1.htm and look it up. Hope this helps.
The 2000 Pontiac Firebird starter can be found on the right hand side of the engine. The starter will be near the back of the engine.

The VIN can reveal a number of things about a car, including its airbag type, country of origin, engine size, model year and trim level. But it will not tell you the original equipment installed on the car. As the VIN will tell you the trim level it is easy to find out what was the original equipment that came on that particular trim level.
