Since you sias pump(s) in plural, I'm assuming that you have dual tanks. Have a friend put their head by the tank in question and listen, when you turn the key to the "on" position, they will hear a high pitched buzzing if the pump is working. That is for the pump in the tank, the one located under the drivers door however, I do not know.
The 1988 model has 2 fuel pumps. A low pressure fuel pump is located in the tank and a high pressure fuel pump is mounted to the frame on the driver's side, under the cab.
yes
Fuel injected? In the fuel tank Carb.? Front lower section of engine

One.
The external fuel pump of an 1988 ford ranger 4*4 xlt is located inside the fuel tank or gas tank.
Either change fuel filter or fuel pump...
on my 1988 ford ranger (2.3L, 5sp), the fuel filter is behind the driver's front wheel on the inner side of the frame. it's kind of easy to find by following the fuel lines from the tank.
No - motorcraft.com lists 2001 Ranger 3.0 L fuel pumps for flex fuel and gas only 3.0 L engines
relay is giving power to other relay pump not working
On a 1988 Ford F-150 : ( I BELIEVE the front tank holds 19 U.S. gallons )
If fuel injected - in the fuel tank If not in the front lower section of engine - follow fuel line
