The easiest way to test without official equipment involves 2 steps. The first, see if it sticks to a magnet. If it does, don't even bother with anything else. the magnetic quality means that it contains iron and is base metal, perhaps plated base metal, but still base metal. If however it doesn't stick then you can go on to step 2. go to your neighborhood Walmart or ace hardware and purchase a hand h-held propane or acetelyne torch, either will do and Last time I checked, propane ran about 12 bucks. Next, place the piece of jewelry; or if you like the piece, a small bit of it such as a jumpring or bit of chain on a heat and fire resistant surface. Now light the torch and play it over the surface of the metal in a circular motion until it is red hot. WARNING: If the metal is plated , the plating will peel off!!!! After the metal has turned red hot, remove the flame and let it air cool. If it is still bright and shiny when it has cooled, Congratulations!!!! you are in posession of jewelry made out of one of 6 "platinum" metals! If it's black and nasty, it's bupkiss. Whoops, almost forgot.....If it is at all tarnished before you begin, it IS NOT a platinum metal...don't waste your time and just appreciate the beauty of it...let me know how it goes and good luck!

How do you clean platinum diamond jewelry?

* Keep your platinum jewelry away from other jewelries to prevent the scratches on the jewelries * Keep your platinum jewelry and other precious items at a safe place. * Clean your platinum jewelry periodically. This will ensure its fine appearance and will help it last. * Clean platinum in the same way you clean other fine jewelry - using a pre-packaged jewelry cleaner or by soaking it in a mild solution of 50% ammonia and 50% warm water and then gently rubbing it with a soft cloth. Note that harsh chemicals such as ammonia should not be used on gemstones other than diamonds because it may damage them - consult a jewelry professional in-person for specific guidance in this matter as it applies to specific jewelry items. * Have your platinum jewelry polished and cleaned by a qualified jeweler twice a year. * Take your platinum jewelry to a qualified jeweler twice per year for inspection. Only allow a trained professional jeweler to work on your platinum jewelry! Adjustments, resizing, polishing and cleaning of your platinum jewelry should be provided by a trained bench jeweler. We can't tell you how many times we have repaired platinum jewelry that has been resized using white gold by some jeweler who should never have been working on a platinum jewelry item to begin with! * Be aware that over time platinum develops a natural patina that many people prefer over the "just polished" appearance of platinum. When this happens to your platinum jewelry you may take it to a qualified jeweler and have the item polished for that "high gloss" look or simply ask them not to remove the patina if that is your preference.

What is the stamped number on platinum?

Platinum jewelry is marked "Plat" or "950 Plat" and is nearly pure platinum. "IridPlat" is 90 percent platinum mixed with 10 percent other metals.

How do you clean 950 platinum jewelry?

950 platinum is 95% pure platinum which is the standard for platinum jewelry. 950 platinum can be cleaned like any other piece of fine jewelry. A jewelry solution could be purchased, but I can tell you what many jewelry stores use in their ultrasonics. I know of many jewelers that mix half Mr. Clean and water with a small amount of ammonia for their jewelry cleaning solution in their ultrasonic. This works excellent for all types of jewelry. Allow the piece to soak for 15 seconds then rinse in water and dry. A polishing cloth can be used if the piece needs to have the high polish shine brought back.

What is the metal used in jewelry?

Most jewelry is made of silver, gold and platinum. Recently other materials like tungsten, palladium, titanium and other metals are being used to make beautiful jewelry pieces.

How do you safely clean diamonique platinum clad jewelry?

Platinum-clad sterling silver jewelry allows you to have all the wonderful shine and durability of platinum without the high cost. In addition, platinum-clad sterling silver jewelry isn't easily tarnished or discolored and, as it ages, it develops a beautiful sheen. However, oils from your lotions, makeup and skin, along with hairspray and dirt, can dull its natural shine. You could take your jewelry to a professional for cleaning, but it is easy to do at home. The whole cleaning process should take no more than an hour, depending on how many pieces you have to clean. The ammonia-based cleaning mixture is for plain platinum-clad sterling silver jewelry or those pieces that contain diamonds only. The ammonia will harm any other stones. For other gemstones, you can use the detergent and water mixture, leaving out the ammonia.

What is the most expensive metal used in jewellery?

The most expensive metal commonly used in jewelry is platinum. Platinum is prized for its rarity, durability, and distinctive white color, making it a popular choice for high-end and luxury jewelry pieces. Its scarcity and the complex process involved in extracting and refining platinum contribute to its higher market value compared to other metals used in jewelry, such as gold or silver.

How is platinum refined and alloyed to make jewelry?

What kinds of jewelry is nickel free?

Silver and Gold are not necessarily nickel-free, in 9 carat gold there isn't actually that much gold! The gold in jewelry is alloyed with other metals - and it is crucial to find out what those other metals are. Look for "guaranteed 100% nickel-free". Find a supplier/retailer who caters to and understands this need. Many don't! Addition: Palladium and Platinum jewelry are nickel free. 950 Platinum is 95% pure Platinum and 5% of either Iridium or Ruthenium (all part of the Platinum family). Palladium is also part of the Platinum family, but much lighter and less expensive than Platinum. Only a small handful of jewelry designers, like myself, create jewelry using Palladium mixed with 24K Gold to yield a 18K Palladium combination.

What does an 900 stamped on a piece of jewelry mean?

This just means the percentage of a particular metal in the jewelry piece, usually silver or platinum. Marked 900 means there is 90% pure silver or platinum mixed with other alloys, as pure silver is very soft, and cannot be used for making jewelry pieces or anything else, without another metal to give it strength, such as copper.
