How come the anitbiotics cure my UTI symptoms but my tests for UTI are always negative?

There are a few possibilities, but the most common has to do with the fact that many labs only report a positive urine culture when there is a high level of bacteria growing in the urine, even though low levels can cause symptoms. Next time, ask your health care provider to request a culture that reports any level of growth rather than only >10^5 CFUs. Quest Labs call this "urine culture, special," and Lab Corp calls it "urine culture, comprehensive." It's the same test your health care provider would order for a specimen collected via catheterization. Many health care providers are unaware that the newer tests report only >10^5 CFUs, as they used to report lower levels of growth.
