There is an association for the 748th Field Artillery which was given to you on another site. As far as searching online, the 748th was an independent unit assigned to different units as needed by Corp, so there is not very much out there. You can use any good search engine and type in the search parameters 748th Field Artillery Battalion.

My father was on the Ommaney Bay -- a pilot, Vail Logsdon. I have some pictures and things and an article that was written about it called "The Last Rat Hole".

My father -- who is still alive and quite healthy -- was the ommaney bay's catapult officer. he can provide a great deal of info as he has a photographic memory.

I have used several sources including the internet, two books, and the USS Ommaney Bay CVE 79 Association. Have also attended the last Ommaney Bay reunion. This could be a lengthy list best handled via E-mail. Will share the info I have including Association contacts.

My father, Raymond Nakai, served on the USS Ommaney Bay in WW2 and was on-board during the battle of the Sulu Sea when the carrier was sunk by Japanese torpedoes and kamakazi. He spent time in the water with his shipmates until they were finally rescued. The rest of his service was spent aboard the USS Dale, DDS.

Today he is in bad health suffering a number of strokes and loss of hearing due to his battle experiences as both a Radioman and Gunner.

He has visits on occasion by his shipmates who are still able to travel extensively to Arizona. I've heard his stories about this period in his life only once but when I was young we found a stash of medals, pictures, keepsakes from his time in the Philippines, Japan and the islands in the region as well as his survival knife and numerous books by the War Department about the Navy in the South Pacific. They impressed us immensely at the time.

(I am trying to have one framed for my son for his birthday) Unfortunately, my father passed away in December, 2002. He attended as many of the reunions as his health permitted and thoroughly enjoyed them. I have never seem him as happy as when he helped organize the reunion here in Shreveport, even though he was very ill at the time.
