This depends exactly where and when the river is measured. The Nile consists of two separate rivers (the Blue Nile and the White Nile) which converge at Khartoum and become the Nile River.
The width of the river varies greatly depending again on the topography - the narrower the deeper and the wider the shallower.
At Khartoum for example during the "Dry Season" the White Nile is only about 2 to 3 foot deep (60cm - 100cm), and is approximately 250 meters wide. The Blue Nile on the other hand is about 15 to 20 foot deep (5 - 8 meters) deep and 40 to 50 meters wide.
At Khartoum during the "Rainy Season" the White Nile can burst its banks at about 8 meters above the dry season level and is approximately 250 meters wide. The Blue Nile can also breach its banks at 20 to 25 meters above the dry season level and can swell to about 200 meters wide! That's a lot of water!
During the "Rainy" season - both rivers are discoloured by sediment and turn brown, while in the "Dry" season they are a distinct blue and white colour respectively.
Because the river has such a long and large catchment area (Highlands of Ethiopia, Southern Sudan etc.) during the rainy season the river can and actually does cause flooding in Khartoum even though it may not be raining there!

The surface of Hudson River in the vicinity of Manhattan froze 3 times in written history, 1821, 1780 and 1720, according to I.N. Phelps Stokes's ''Iconography of Manhattan Island.'' The surface further upstream would completely freeze but for icebreaker ships that keep the waters open for commercial traffic. It is unlikely the Hudson would ever freeze completely as it is salty near it's mouth and upwards of forty-five feet deep.
