The empire did not fall. When Alexander died prematurely, there was no clear heir, and his generals divided the empire amongst them, establishing their own kingdoms in opposition to each other. This settled down to Egypt, Syria, Macedonia and Pergamon.

Alexander the great's empire fell after he died. It was so big and that made it very unstable. The leaders that Alexander had chosen were very greedy and conquered the other countries, making Alexander's empire fall into three different empires.

It didn't exactly collapse. Alexander left no clear successor, and his generals carved it up amongst themselves, and they established their own kingdoms. Parts of it were around to be absorbed into the Roman Empire (Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Mesopotamia).

He died and didn't name someone to replace him so there was a power void. His generals fought each other for the empire and its parts. No consistent head of state was able to pull it all together.
