There was no such title as Emperor. He called himself Princeps or First Citizen, and governed indirectly by pulling strings to manipulate elections and decisions. The period of him and his successor Princeps is known as the Principate. In the 3rd Century CE when rule became openly autocratic we invented the word Emperor (the word is derived from the military honorific title Imperator and the magistrate's power of imperium) to describe a despot of an empire.

In 27 BCE he declared himself Princeps, took on the powers and immunity of a tribune of the plebs inside Rome, the authority of a pro-magistrate outside Rome, and contol of the provinces with legions to keep them out of the hands of potential rivals. Even with this camouflage, he was sufficiently mindful of what happened to his adoptive father Julius Ceasar and wore a cuirass under his toga when he announced all this in the Senate.

Augustus came to power by very smartly doing things for the empire and when the time came to become emperor he actually asked the senate if he could have all the power and they just gave it to him. So you see Augustus was a very clever man.

This is an oversimplification but after Caesar was assisinated by the senate. Octavian (who was caesars adopted son) formed an alliance with Marc Antony and Marcus Lepidus (called the second triumvirate) they go to war with the ringleaders of the assassination plot (specifically brutus and cassius) they win, as a part of a previously arranged deal, Ocatavion got control of Rome (and Europe) while marc Antony got control of Egyp After Lepidus was forced out of the triumvirate, Antony and Octavian were engaged in a civil war which Octavian won. By winning the war, Octavian became the sole ruler and thus the first emperor.
