While some conservative Talk Shows have asserted (without any proof) that the president got into Harvard because of special help or special connections, there is no evidence of this. Most objective sources say that he got in on the strength of his application. He had good grades on the Law School exams, made a persuasive presentation about his academic achievements as an undergraduate and his work experience since he graduated, and gave compelling reasons for his interest in becoming a lawyer. Harvard's admissions committee does not tell the public how it makes its decisions, but it is a very competitive and rigorous process, and based on a number of criteria. Barack Obama would not have been admitted unless the committee believed he had all of the credentials to ensure success at Harvard. (It turned out to be a correct decision to admit him: he graduated with academic honors, and was the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review.)

There is an internet myth that he got in due to racial preferences, but there is no evidence to support it. Most reliable sources say he got in due to good grades from Columbia University, his work experience as an advocate for the poor (he worked for five years before entering Harvard Law School), his references, and his application essay about why he wanted to become a lawyer.

He applied like anyone who wants to get into Harvard. He was not a legacy admission. He had an undergraduate degree from a good school- Columbia and I presume he got good recommendations. He may have received some special consideration as a minority applicant- Harvard likes to have a diversity in its student body.

I am not sure which office you are asking about. He was a state senator in Illinois, and then a US senator before he was elected to the office of presidency. In all cases, he got into office by campaigning and winning elections.

Affirmative action. If he were white, he wouldn't have been admitted into Arizona State, let alone Harvard

What do you have to do to get into Harvard College?

You definitely need to get great grades…not just good grades, but great grades. A high GPA and a high SAT score are a must. After you accomplish this, start thinking about ways you can separate yourself from the competition. Extracurricular activities are very important. Lastly, make sure you want to go to Harvard. I know a lot of students that thought they wanted to go to their dream school, but when they got in and went to that school, they were really disappointed. Pay attention to what actual students of Harvard are saying.

What did Obama do in his college?

By all accounts, he was a very good student, and worked hard. He has admitted that he went through a rebellious period of time, as many students did, but in the end, his grades at Occidental and at Columbia were good enough to get into Harvard University for graduate school. In law school, he achieved the position of the editor of the Harvard Law Review, the first black student at Harvard Law School to ever attain this.
