The exact year that the Boxing Day tradition started is not known, but it is believed to have had its origin sometime in the mid nineteenth century in England. Some historians believe the name 'Boxing Day' came about because the boxes placed in churches where parishioners deposited alms (coins) for the poor and needy were opened, and the contents were distributed on December 26, which is also the Feast of St Stephen. However, the exact year this occurred is not recorded.

Boxing day started in the 19th centery because people were feeling that store owns and such gave a lot and they didnt really give anything back, so people took a vote if boxing day should be named and actual holiday and they voted yes. That is how it all happened.

I believe in Canada back then servants could not get off on Christmas because their employer had parties, etc. that they needed them to work at. So days later the servants got their own little Christmas and got extra Christmas "bonuses" and maybe gifts in boxes. if this is incorrect just check Google.

boxing day, as in the day after Christmas.?

In Victorian times the more well off people would leave a box of leftover food and treats from their Christmas Day feast for the tradesmen who served them all year.

The man who delivered the coal for heating, the postman etc.

To this day, the Christmas tip or bonus, as we call it in North America, is stiil quite often refered to as the Christmas box in England.
