Prince sidhartha was reduced to a skeleton after forty days of sitting still like a log under a tree.He went upto the river bank staggered and fell unconscious. He had an intuitive insight about the futility of the path of extrememe penance . how can one cross the ocean of sansara if he is too weak to reach even the bank of an ordinary river -he told himself . He heard one woman sing a song that went as -do not stretch the cord of your veena so tight that it breaks not losen it so much that no note comes from it . He was enlightenend and became the Budha . the singer gave him some pudding which he ate . his five fellow ascetics deserted him for breaking the vow and accepting food from a lowely woman -But they later joined him as his close disciples .
