France had a distinguised albiet checkered career dating back to Bishop Pigneaux under Louis XVI in the 1780's. Napoleon III was involved in 1858 and as a result of the Franco Chinese War of 1884-5 France became the dominant European presence in Cochin China until Dien Bin Phu in 1954. Japan had ousted the French during WWII and it wanted its Colony back.
