Greece was not a country. The Greek world comprised a couple of thousand independent city-states spread around the Mediterranean and Black Seas. At times some of these cities were captured by other Greek cities or by aliens.

The cities in Asia Minor were taken over by an expanding Persian Empire, and liberated for a while after the Persian War, only to be reabsorbed by Persia after 60 years. Macedonia took many of them over, and the Macedonian Hellenistic Kingdoms divided the western ones up amongst them. Eventually they were all swallowed up by the expansion of the Roman Empire.
