He seems best know for his attempts to divorce his first wife

In Henry's time almost everyone in Europe including England practised the Roman Catholic faith which made divorce illegal. Royalty could, however, petition the Pope in Rome to seek an annulment to their marriages on certain grounds ie the marriage had not been consumated.

When the Pope refused to annul Henry's marriage to Catherine. Henry passed the Act of Supremecy making himself head of the English Church.

Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury was then able to annul the marraige.

Henry VIII changed the course of History in England by breaking away from the Catholic Church and becoming the head of the Church of England. This also had an impact on the world. Before Henry VIII started the Church of England, Martin Luther had already broken away from the Catholic Church. Henry's shift from Catholicism helped the movement spread throughout England and it's future colonies.
