Herman Haupt is probably the least mentioned man that made a substantial contribution to the North's war efforts. Haupt was responsible for the organization and implementation of the Union's military railroad system. This enabled the Union's ability to move the many soldiers ( up to two million soldiers were enlisted in total for the war ) back and forth to battle areas and to move weapons and food supplies as well. One outstanding accomplishment, noted by US President Lincoln was Haupt's successful construction of a four hundred foot long, and eighty feet high railroad trestle by unskilled labor in two weeks. To his credit he also developed prefabricated truss bridges along with new methods for reshaping bent rails to allow faster reconstruction of rail lines destroyed by retreating Confederate forces.
The first person to throw a pitch in a major league baseball game was Bobby Mathews of the Fort Wayne Kekiongas against the Cleveland Forest Cities on May 4, 1871. The first batter in a major league game, Deacon White, hit a double. I don't know if it was on the first pitch, though.
Germany has a first-rate school and university system. Usually the children start at the age of 6 years to go to school. The first four years all children go to the same type of school which is called " Grundschule " - basic school. After those four years the teacher and the parents decide, which way the children can go further. There are three possibilities: Hauptschule - The child will stay another 5 years in school - which is the lowest education you can get. Realschule - The child stays another 6 years in school. Gymnasium - The child stays another 7 years in school and has the possibiliety to go to university. Germany has also many possibilities, where children can get a higher education even after they "only" visited the Haupt- or Realschule.
