When Germany invaded Russia during WW2, the Soviet Union kept retreating, drawing the Germans into their territory. They left them in Dunkan and burned down their own town, leaving the Germans with no food or supplies to use and they froze to death. The same thing happened to Napoleon, in a different part of Russia.

Because Russia is so large, this tactic is very effective for defeating their enemies.

Both advanced far into the interior of the country, but never took the capital. Both were defeated by the icy Russian winter. And the Russia strategy to beat them was to burn everything in their path. And no matter how strange that sounds, it is very hard to carry enough supplies for an army all the way to Russia's capital and they have to if they can't steal anything as the go. They'll be understocked when the cold comes and it becomes a death sentence.

Napoleon lost his war. Adolf Hitler killed more than 26 400 000 Soviet citizens. He lost his war.

Both campaigns foundered on their failure to understand the Russian winter and the sheer length of the supply lines.

In some cases the two invasions were quite similar, Hitler and Napoleon were trying to fight a war on two fronts, Napoleon had 220,000 men tied up in Spain when he attacked Russia and Hitler was using badly needed resources in helping Italy in the Mediterranean while still occupying most of France, The Low Countries, Norway and Denmark. To say nothing of the Russian Winter, which ultimately stopped both men.
