Hitler had the most modern military in the world in 1939, which had been tested and honed during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. While most European nations were still flying biplanes, the Luftewafe was flying aircraft capable of over 200 miles per hour, armed with 20mm canon. The Tiger tank was unequaled until late in the war. The German 88mm artillary gun was effective as a tank gun, anti-aircraft weapon, and field artillary. Also, Hitler did not fight the way that European military leaders had fought for over a century. He bypassed the Maginot Line of France, a heavily fortified defense built specifically to stop German troops from invading France, by invading the supposedly neutral Low Countries. The Blitzkreig was a combined armoured, paratrooper, and air assault, which overwhelmed the antiquated defenses of its targets.

Adolph Hitler's first six years in power resulted in rapid economic recovery from the Great Depression, and the denunciation of restrictions imposed on Germany after World War I. He oversaw annexation of territories that were home to millions of ethnic Germans. All these actions brought him popular support.

Military aggression coupled with modern technology & leadership of the Prussian military class. The Blitzkreig appeared irresistable, it was devastating and demoralising. But, and this is the point, it was based, to a great extent, on bluff. By & large, for example, Rommel (yes, I know he's a Wurttemberger) fought against forces far larger than his own in North Africa. And it does need saying that at no time is Hitler a 'General', he is not a great commander, but he uses, & then discards, the talent of others. Undeniably the Wehrmacht was, however, a formidable force and aided by modern weaponry & tactics it gave the Germans the means to wage war as never seen before, with terrifying results. It is also noticable with the Luftwaffe & Kreigsmarine, as well as the Panzer forces, all the material is fresh from the drawing board, it's all brand new & up to date, there is no residue from previous times, (Some ships of the Royal Navy are, for example, decidedly WW1 vintage) and its performance in warfare is, generally unquestioned. The Graf Spee, off South America in 1939, had fought the 3 cruisers it opposed and was scuttled by its crew largely as a result of British disinformation. For once the Germans were outbluffed.

Hitler was not a success, in fact he was miserable failure. After WW1 the treaty of Versailles imposed restrictions on Germany that severely inhibited its ability to recover its economy,military, and standing in the world. Unemployment was high, people were angry, and communism was moving in. This set the stage for a nationalistic movement aimed to restore pride and Germany's standing in the world.Hitlers ability to speak and inspire the masses was his true genius. His theatrics, grandstanding and tension filled speeches often brought crowds from tears to ecstasy. When Hitler took power the treaty of Versailles was ignored and he began to rebuild the military. This act created industry and jobs, unemployment dropped, morale soared. In Hitler people found their savior and would follow him anywhere at whatever the cost. Hitlers vision of a "Reich that would last a thousand years", left Germany worse than when he took power. At one point his own military commanders conspired to kill him due to his poor decisions.In the end while the bombs were dropping and Germany was crumbling Hitler hiding in his bunker took his own life. I would hardly call that successful leadership.

Hitler was successful with invading Poland, France, Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands and Luxembourg because he tricked them into signing neutrality documents with nonaggression pacts. He had absolutely no intention of honoring those pacts. He tricked them then invaded them when they least expected it and did not have enough troops or armament ready to defend themselves. So they tried the appeasement tactic of letting Hitler into their countries hoping he would leave them alone and not do a lot of harm. He did exactly the opposite.
Hitler was successful at the beginning of the war because he used deception, trickery and fearful oppression to overtake France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, The Netherlands and Norway. He tried to trick Russia but Stalin was onto his methods and Stalin bought time by signing a nonaggression pact, just as those other countries had done. He also fooled France and Britain by using an appeasement tactic to regain the Sudetenland. He acquired Italy by fooling Benito Mussolini into thinking he would be a big leader in the Axis but really Hitler used him so he could gain resources from Italy. He had Mussolini go after the oil in Africa too. Once the true colors of the Nazi regime and the Waffen SS was revealed Europeans learned to retaliate and fight against Hitler.

Hitler's Army was successful for a number of reasons. Some of these would be:

  • It had well trained and experienced officers. Russia had crippled her army through Stalin's purges; France had First World War leadership and so did the UK. The USA had zero experience having only played a miniscule part in the First World War, and didn't gain any until Germany were losing.
  • They were the first nation to realise the advantages of a mechanised army. The school of thought at that period was to use horses for transport and armoured vehicles as infantry support. The Polish army used cavalry tactics that had already been proved outdated during the Great War. A German general named Heinz Guderian had recently written a thesis that inspired the next point;
  • They used "Blitzkrieg" tactics (lighting war). They would first bombard an area with artillery, then send over aircraft to bomb the target with tanks following shortly after to batter defenses and enemy tanks. Finally the infantry would be brought in on half tracks and trucks to clean up what was left and round up the prisoners.
  • Discipline was good within the Wehrmacht - morale was high as they continued to win. This was to be the first thing to abandon them once they started to lose at Stalingrad in 1943.
  • Ideology and motivation. They truly believed they were taking revenge for mistreatment at the hands of France at the Treaty of Versailles. They also blamed Jews for betraying them and for prospering while ordinary German people were going through the worst depression ever seen in Northern Europe, suffering hyper inflation that meant that what had been enough to buy a loaf of bread the day before was worthless once they came to spend it.
  • Geography. This was to Germany's benefit initially as it was difficult for Britain to use her greatest weapon, the Royal Navy, as the war began in the east (Poland). France shares an Eastern Border with Germany on which it decided to build the defunct Maginot Line, a series of defensive forts. France shares a northern border with Belgium who were an ally. So as not to offend the Maginot line was not extended along this border, and no troops were positioned there either. This proved a costly mistake because once Hitler had invaded the low countries to the north there was nothing to stop the German army from marching into France. Similarly, when attacking Russia a little later geography played it's part. Russia (Soviet Union) had along her western border the Ukraine (also at that time a part of the Union). The vast open plains of the Ukraine were not suited to a defensive war and Germany used this to her advantage.

This is not the most comprehensive answer but it should go some way to helping. If you really want to know why Germany had it so good for so long I recommend studying!

Kind regards

R Lawson

What is Hitler's view of political leadership?

Defining the type of political leader that Adolf Hitler was can be a difficult task. He was, after all, a charismatic leader, a diplomatic leader, a highly organized and patient leader -- in many ways a successful leader, if also a failure in the end. It is most true, perhaps, to say that he was a power-hungry, tyrannical, and violent leader whose brief reign at the head of Germany was mercifully ended by the effort of the Allies.
