After a war of independence a treaty was signed in 1921, where 6 of Ireland's counties, which became known as Northern Ireland, remained under British rule and the remaining 26 counties of Ireland became independent. That part is now commonly known as the Republic of Ireland.
There was a time where all of Ireland belonged to England. A huge majority of people in Ireland were unhappy about this. They wanted to have their own country just for them. So they started a war against England. They attempted lots of times to win but were never successful. They almost were at the 1916 Rising, but they still lost against England. Well anyway a general of Ireland at the time, Michael Collins, made a deal with the English that if they gave the Northern bit of Ireland to Britain then the British would have to leave them alone in their country. They went along with it and Ireland then became a Republic and was given the name: Eire.
The whole or Ireland was part of British territory until 1922 when the civil war there was settled by the partition into Eire and N Ireland. Eire constituted the counties with majority Catholic populations, the counties that became N Ireland had majority protestant populations. Ireland was taken over by England a long time ago . but after some time Ireland fought back and won back 26 of the 32 counties. the 26 were called the republic of Ireland and the other six still owned by England were called northern Ireland. and the main reason Ireland still don't have the six counties is because England don't want to give them up.
p.s. i am 12 and live in Ireland
Because Northern Ireland wanted to (according to votes taken there, which may or may not have been skewed). They wanted to remain loyal to the crown and/or felt it would be more beneficial for there economy, religious freedom, etc. to remain a part of Britain. ("Home Rule is Rome Rule"). The republic is an independent state (although, concerning its membership of the EU, some people people contest this fact. But, officially, it is an independent state), whereas the north is a part of the United Kingdom (along, with Wales, Scotland, etc.). The seperation (also known as partition) is similar to what happened with India and Pakistan when they too achieved independence from being a colony of Britain (but on a much smaller scale, obviously). It was a sort of long, slightly confusing process and there are many controversial issues and historical issues surrounding it (Plantations, famine, religious biggotry, Civil War, Rebellion, Martyrdom, the Commonwealth, Home Rule, politics, neutrality, The Troubles [terrorism from both sides], colonialism, etc.) and it can still be a sensitive topic in some parts of Ireland, to this day. Basically, most of the people in the Republic wanted to be indepent of Britain, and most people in the North didn't. That's very, very general and simplified, though. =) Hope it helped anyway!
Ireland divided into two because some people of Ireland didnt want to be ruled by Great Britain anymore
The Irish took back the bulk of their country from the English Empire. The northern counties are still under military occupation.

Korea is divided into north (People's Democratic Republic of Korea) and south (Republic of Korea). Ireland is divided into the south (Republic of Ireland) and north (Northern Ireland - a British dependency).
No it is an island (the island of Ireland or Eire). The island is divided into two parts the Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland which is a part of the United Kingdom.
The two political divisions of Ireland are Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. However, Ireland is also divided religiously between the Protestants, mainly in the North, and the Catholics, who mainly reside in the South.
Ireland is divided by two parts; north being protestants, south being Catholics
Northern
The Act of 1920, partitioned Ireland into two parts: the independent 'Republic of Ireland' and 'Northern Ireland' - 'Northern Ireland' remained loyal to Great Britain.
In 1922 Ireland was partitioned which created Northern Ireland and what is now the Republic Ireland. Britain and Ireland are separate islands, so no part of Ireland was with Britain, which consists of just England, Scotland and Wales. Ireland was part of the United Kingdom, which consisted at that time for Britain and Ireland, and when the Ireland was divided Northern Ireland stayed a part of the United Kingdom while the rest of Ireland became independent.
Ireland is a country just off the coast of England. it is divided into two sections, northern and southern. One is catholic, and one is protestant.
The island of Ireland contains both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The name "Ireland" is also an official name for the Republic of Ireland. The other name used is the Irish version: Éire. You will see that on coins and stamps.
