People of the Muslim faith first came to the Cape in 1652 as Dutch East India Company workers and then in larger numbers in 1654 when the Dutch decided to use the Cape settlement as a penal station for political prisoners. It was from this time that slaves, political exiles and convicts were brought to the Cape from India, especially Goa, Bengal, Coromandel and the Malabar Cost, and from Saloor (Sri Lanka), the Indonesian islands, Madagascar and the African mainland. In the case of the Bengali slaves many were Muslim, but in the case of slaves from the Indonesian Islands most were not Muslim, but non-Muslim indigenes sold into slavery to the Dutch and Portuguese by Muslim traders. Many of the latter were only to convert to Islam in the Cape.
Indian slaves formed the nucleus of what was to become the Cape Muslim society. They were joined by the slaves from Saloor (present day Sri Lanka) and even North East Africa and Arabia. The first recorded arrival of the Muslims who were known as the Mardyckers (Free Blacks), is registered as 1652; they were brought from Amboyna in the southern Mallaca Islands for the protection of the colony and for serving as members of the Company workforce.
