While Lenin was disabled from strokes, Joseph Stalin, Grigori Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev ran the country through the structure of the Communist Party. This continued after Lenin died in 1924. Stalin was General Secretary of the Communist Party and began placing people loyal to him in important posts in government and on the Central Committee of the Party. He eliminated Leon Trotsky, Lenin's choice for his successor), had him expelled from the Party then from the country.

Over the next few years, Stalin isolated Zinoviev and Kamenev and had them expelled and eventually executed. By 1929, he was the only one left with any power in the government although he was still subject to being removed by vote of the Politburo of the Central Committee. By about 1932, he had enough of his men on the Politburo that he could do almost as he pleased without worrying about being removed. That is when he became the dictator that he is known for.

No, Joe Stalin became the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union 3 April 1922, and after Lenin's death in 1924, rose to the leadership as Supreme Soviet.

The USSR entered Poland 1 September 1939, and Stalin sent troops in 16 days later.

that may be the answer for those who are uneducated and live in the street and could care less about school but this is mine:

Stalin was the chief of the Bolshevik's party and changes his name to Stalin to better fit for the position. As general of Communist party Stalin moved his friend into powerful positions. So by the time Lenin had died, Stalin had already gained a lot of power and forced Trotsky to leave the next year and put Stalin in power.

While Lenin was dying, Stalin and Trotsky were trying to become the newly formed Soviet Union's leader. Trotsky had played a major was in the civil war and was the natural successor but he underestimated Stalin and was tricked by him (Tricked into not turning up to Lenin's funeral). Stalin was devious, he would use a counter argument to a subject to get rid of one politician and then use the argument he argued against to pick off the rest of the politicians. Stalin also placed his supporters in important positions. Trotsky wasn't well during the time Lenin was dying and wasn't politically active as much as he should have been, hence Stalin used his time to gain support.

Here are all the key points, you may want to add dates and examples (Walsh GCSE text book)

Also Trotsky made a mistake of supporting private property which was wrong in the eyes of poor people in Russia, so they supported Stalin instead.

It varied wildly:

  • Right after the German invasion Stalin had some sort of "breakdown" that effectively made him nonfunctional for about 3 weeks. Individual generals had to organize their troops with no overall coordination.
  • Several other times he had spectacular leadership.
