Not well. He was handed a difficult job after the assassination of JFK and his brother Bobby. JFK and Bobby Kennedy wanted the young men brought home because they knew the war was lost in Vietnam and they should have never have entered this war in the first place. People think that the President just ups and makes these decisions, but the head of the War Dept., has a lot of clout as well and generally presidents don't argue with them, but JFK did during the Missile Cuban Crisis and the War Dept., had it out for the Kennedy brothers after that one. It is said that to this day Lyndon B. Johnson (he wife told this story) was haunted by nightmares of the many soldiers that died while he reigned as president. It's hard to say if he could have done anything faster than he did. Let's lay history at his feet that he had a plateful and the assassination of JFK and Bobby Kennedy didn't help him to resolve matters.
