Mao Zedong launched the Cultural Revolution in 1966 to regain control of the Communist Party in China. He felt that the current leaders were becoming too content and lacked the revolutionary zeal. He closed schools and urged young people to oust the leadership that Mao felt was leading the country astray. The impact of this was China closing itself off to the world again, and violent oppression to any who challenged Mao's view of what China should be. This lingered on for a decade until Mao's death. Once Mao passed away in 1976, it would be another 20 years before China became more open to the West.

Cultural Revolution was meant to impose socialist orthodoxy and rid China of "old elements". But in reality, it was a power struggle within the the ruling party. The impact of the campaign was far reaching, and affected everyone, in all aspects of life.
