Octavian did not actually make the Roman Republic collapse himself. The Republic collapsed due to a series of civil wars: Great Roman Civil War or Caesar's Civil War,(49--45 BC), the Post-Caesarian civil war (44-43 BC), Liberators' civil war (44--42 BC), the Sicilian revolt (44--36 BC), Perusine War (41--40 BC) and the Final War of the Roman Republic (32--30 BC). By the time of the final war Octavian was the rules of the western part of the Roman territories and Marc Antony was the ruler of the eastern part. The final war was a contest between these two men over who would be the sole ruler of Rome and her territories.

Octavian, obtained a vast fortune through the spoils of war and, by being the final victor, gained control of the army. He used this to concentrate power in his hands and become an absolute ruler while pretending to be restoring a republic shattered by the civil wars. He learned from the lesson of Julius Caesar's murder. He was assassinated because he gave the impression of trying to become a king, which made him look an enemy of the republic. Octavian therefore chose the title of Princeps, which was derived from the Princeps Senatus, who was the first member of the senate and acted as a chair. The world roughly means first man and had a "first among equals" connotation and gave a republican veneer to his rule and a pretence that he ruled in conjuction with the senate. In reality, he was turning himself into an absolute ruler and the seante into an instrument of his rule. The senate was unable to counter this due to his power, control of the army and poplularity among the people (he used the fact that he was the adoptive son of Caesar, who had been seen as the hero of the people, for his Propaganda). He also restored Roman ancestral religion cults which had decayed and presented himself as an upholder of Roman traditions.

What convinced Octavian to declare war on Antony?

There was not one thing that convinced Octavian to make war on Antony, but a culmination of many things. Some of them were personal dislike, Antony's callous treatment of Octavian's sister, the contest for both political and military power and most of all, Antony's giving Roman territory to Cleopatra.

How did the Roman Empire become an empire?

The Republic did not become an empire. Historians make a confusing use of the term empire. The Republic was brought down by a series of civil wars. The last one was a fight between Octavian and Mac Antony over who would become the sole ruler of Rome and her territories. Octavian won and he established his own absolute personal rule and started the 503-year period of rule by emperors. Octavian was given the honorary title of Augustus and historians use this name to indicate the period when he was the first Roman emperor. Historians use the term empire in the more familiar sense of territorial possessions and also to indicate the period of rule by emperors. In the territorial sense, the Republic already had an empire. Much of Rome's imperial expansion occurred during the republican period. In fact the Republic fell under the strain of poorly managed imperial expansion, which was one of the major causes of the civil wars. In addition to the above, emperor is a term which is used by historians. The Romans did not use it. They called the absolute ruler princeps, which is usually translated as first among equals, first citizen.

How did Sulla change Rome?

First of all, what did Sulla do? Sulla took over the Senate and made himself dictator. Basically, what he did was use his private army to get into power, kill everyone who opposed him, and then resign. This affected the Roman Republic because this paved the way for the emperors of the future and the collapse of the Republic. When other people try this in future, they'll take power, and not resign afterwards, but instead pass power on to their children and start a dynasty.

What did octavian conquer first?

This man changed his name several times. Historians use the name Octavian for the period from his adoption by Julius Caesar to when he became the first Roman emperor (44-27 BC). Following Roman naming conventions, his name changed from Gaius Octavius to Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Octavian) when he was adopted. Why did roman repuplic become an empire during Augustus's rule?

The Term Roman Empire can be confusing because historians often use it to indicate the period of rule by emperors which followed the Republic. However, the Republic already had an empire. Much of Rome's imperial expansion occurred during the Republic. The Republic fell under the weight of imperialism. It had become dysfunctional because of it. The central government lost control over the provinces (conquered territories). The governors of the provinces acted independently from Rome. The professionalisation of the army led to soldiers being loyal to their military commanders. These men could use their soldiers to obtain what they wanted through violence or the threat of violence. Corruption was rampant and endemic. The senators became unpopular and were seen as being only concerned with the interests of the aristocracy. All this led to civil wars. In the first one Julius Caesar fought and defeated the forces of the senate. He then concentrated power in his hands to feed his personal ambition, to create a strong central government, make reforms and address the plight of the poor. After his assassination there were more civil wars which continued a power struggle which led to the fall of the Republic. There was the Liberators' War (44-42 BC) where Octavian (later he was called Augustus) and Mark Antony fought and defeated Caesar's assassins who called themselves Liberators. Then was the Sicilian Revolt (44-36 BC) where Octavian defeated other former opponents of Caesar. In the Perusine War (41-40 BC) Mark Antony's younger brother and his wife fought Octavian. Octavian won. In the Final Civil War of the Roman Republic (32-30 BC) Octavian defeated mark Antony and his ally, Cleopatra VII of Egypt. Octavian won this war as well, and the struggle for power. He became the most powerful man in Rome. He was in charge of the army and had accumulated a massive wealth during the wars. In 27 BC he became the first emperor as Augustus.
