Eris (the personification of discord and strife) was upset that she did not get invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis (the parents of Achilles). So, in usual fashion, she decided to add chaos to the proceedings by tossing a golden apple into the midst of the crowd. On it was etched the word KALLISTEI which means "for the most beautiful". This led to a vanity fueled dispute between Hera, Athena and Aphrodite.
Zeus, not wanting more trouble than there already was, and knowing of now impartial judge at the wedding, quickly set off to find a suitable decider. Spying the young Paris tending sheep on Mt. Garagarus, Zeus bid Hermes to lead the quarreling goddesses to their new judge.
So, you see, Paris didn't "have" the golden apple, per se. He simply decided who should get it. In the end he chose Aphrodite, who had offered him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world. We all know how well that ended.
