How Elizabeth Became QueenQueen Elizabeth I became Queen because her father, King Henry VIII, was a King. When King Henry died Elizabeth didn't rise to the throne, it was her half-brother Edward who succeeded King Henry. He was only 9 years old! King Edward died at 15 as he was weedy and weak (in the Tudor period it wasn't uncommon for this to happen). When Edward died, Elizabeth's half-sister, Mary, became Queen - a short lived engagement.

She succeeded to the throne (November 17, 1558), after the death of her half-sister Mary Tudor. She was next in line for the throne when her sister Mary I died without having any children. Mary became queen after the death of her (and Elizabeth's) half-brother Edward.

She ascended to the Royal office on the death of her Father , George Vi, there was an interregnum until she became adult. Elizabeth II was crowned in l953, this marking the coronation, and beginning of her reign. Queen Mary died in l953 and this slowed things up a bit, so to speak. ( 3.25.53).

Automatically, when her half-brother Edward VI died at the age of 15 as she was Henry VIII's eldest daughter and next in line to the throne (against her father Henry VIII's wishes) She had to wait until the Protestant Lady Jane Grey, who had been declared Queen, had been deposed after only nine days on the throne.

When King George V died, his eldest son, Edward, became king. Edward fell in love with a divorced woman, Wallis Simpson. Royal Family members cannot marry divorced people. Edward was given a choice: the woman or the crown. Edward chose the woman, and his younger brother Albert became king. Albert took on the name George VI. He was married to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and had two daughters: Elizabeth and Margaret. When he died in 1952, his eldest daughter Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II.
