They had a mutual respect for each other, and both ultimately were striving for the same thing. Ronald Reagan is frequently cited as the man who toppled Communism and ended the Cold War, but I feel Gorbachev deserves a lot more of the credit than Reagan does.

∙ 10y agoGorbachev was the premier of the USSR, the chief rival of the US for world supremacy. It only made sense to work with him and talk to him and try to work out agreements that would prevent any future wars and hopefully promote mutually beneficial trade between the two countries. Reagan was smart enough not to make any concessions that would weaken the US position.
