The republican system didn't work well for the amount of territories Rome ruled by the 2nd century BC, and couldn't deal with social consequences of Rome's nearly continuous state of warfare. So the military became more powerful and lost its loyalty to the republic, and was there after used as a political tool by ambitious generals.
