He was one of the first citizens from America in the 1830s to go into Mexican land (now Texas) and start claiming land. He attracted more and more settlers into the region, who all disobeyed the Mexican laws and eventually led a revolt (along with the native Mexicans who wanted independence) against the Mexican government, which resulted in battles and finally the annexation of Texas. So, because of Austin, all of the Americans were able to come in and take the land (a recurring theme of American Manifest Destiny).
