Stephen King’s first novel Carrie was filmed by Brian DePalma in 1976, Salem’s Lot was turned into a TV movie in 1979, and Stanley Kubrick’s film of The Shining appeared in 1980. Since then, Horror films and TV events adapted from King’s literary output have been a major part of the American media landscape. I think King brings an “everyday†quality to his horror, placing it firmly within the family and within recognizable pop-culture settings; his characters eat at McDonald’s, drink Coca-colas, and often fondly recall 1960s “monster culture.†As such his work is very much part of the more realist horror films that arises in the aftermath of Psycho, Peeping Tom (1960), Vietnam, and Watergate.
