'Iron Curtain' was a figure of speech used by Winston Churchill to describe the effect of Russian expansion and domination of Eastern Europe immediately after WWII. Stalin worked on posession being nine-tenths of the law, and the other Allies were in no mood to engage in another military confrontation. Consequently, many nations seeking liberation from tyrannical German occupation got tyrannical Russian Communist occupation instead.

Churchill announced that 'an Iron Curtain has descended across Europe.', and the phrase stuck.
