Miep was originally Otto's product tester and head of the complaint ("customer service") department. Otto soon made her secretary. He liked and respected the industrious young woman, and her boy friend Jan Gies. Soon, Otto was inviting them for dinner at his home, where they got to know the whole family. Miep and Jan were like "family" before the Franks ever went into hiding.

Anne was terrified at the thought of going out on the street, but said she would do whatever her parents decided. They elected to think about it over night, and the next day told Miep that they felt it was too risky.
