Many young men got very excited and thought about the glory of fighting a war. They looked at it like it was a sport and thought it would end fast. Neither side expected the bloody battles and all of the death that took place. Young men lined up to volunteer for the Union and Confederate armies.

Lots of them were excited about it at first, when both sides thought they were heading for a quick bloodless victory. But war-weariness soon set in, as Grant ended prisoner-exchange, and the two sides fought it out till one side simply ran out of men and supplies.

By the time Sherman crossed Georgia, the locals were urging him to ravage their next-door sister Confederate state of South Carolina, which had started the war.
