What are some similarities and differences between Al-Qaeda and the Taliban?

Al-QaedaAl-Qaeda is an international terrorist organization. Al-Qaeda's mission is to bring about the Fall of the West and the Islamicization (both cultural, religious, and political) of Western Nations. Their organization sought refuge in several Arab and Muslim countries and found space to grow in Afghanistan until the American Invasion in 2001. Since that point, they have grown cells in numerous other countries, but focused their greatest efforts in franchising. Franchising means that a nondescript Arab militant group will begin to call themselves Al-Qaeda and advocate for Al-Qaeda's goals without actually being connected to Al-Qaeda's central command structure. In return, Al-Qaeda will donate funds to this militant group to pursue its aims. As a result, people who identify as Al-Qaeda may not even be connected to the Al-Qaeda leadership in the same way that the individual owners of McDonald's Restaurants do not necessarily have a connection with McDonald's Executives.TalibanThe Taliban is a specific political Islamist Party/Militant Organization. The Taliban has certain political aims: the control of Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan. The Taliban also were able to hold national control in Afghanistan and ruled it according to some of the most barbaric interpretations of Shari'a Law. As a result, they spread out through national channels such as police and justice departments. The Taliban, consequently, has very limited aims that came in direct contravention of American interests only in 2001 when the United States invaded Afghanistan. The Taliban, while supporting Al-Qaeda, were not (prior to 2001) interested in the latter's goal of attacking and Islamicizing the West. They are still opposed to exerting resources to achieve these goals, but do focus their efforts on removing the Northern Alliance government of Afghanistan and leading that country again.

Why did America go to war in Afghanistan after helping put the Taliban into power during the Russia-Afghanistan war?

The Americans exploited the concept of Jihad in Islam to fight the soviets and push them out of Afghanistan, However, when the Mujahedeen ( The Islamic holy fighters) won the war and started to rule, their policy did suit the Americans. For example, Taliban ( the term used now for the Mujahdeen) are sympathatic with Arabs due to Islamic ties with them. This support included anti-Israeli position and call for the Palestinan cause. Such policy made the Americans move against Taliban and declared war against them specially after what happened in 9-11 and the support Osama Bin Laden by the Taliban. The Mujahadeen.

Should Canadian Forces Be In Afghanistan?

Yes and no. They are heping a lot over there but unfortunately as soon as they leave a town/village that they were helping the Taliban messes everything up again. So many noble men and women have lost their lives, and sometimes it seem like they're doing it for no reason.

Why is the US military in Afghanistan?

The US is currently in Afghanistan following the attacks on September 11, 2001. The attacks were led by a lone terrorist organization called Al Qaeda, who set up their "headquarters" in the mountains of Eastern Afghanistan. The Taliban, a local extremest group was hired by Al Queda to protect Osama Bin Laden the leader of the terrorist organization. The US ordered the Taliban to give up Bin Laden or be destroyed by a US invasion. After a few days it was clear that Bin Laden would not surrender. The US invaded Afghanistan in October of 2001 after intelligence was gathered by a CIA team codenamed "Jawbreaker" and defeated both the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Bin Laden escaped into the Tora Bora mountains and later into Pakistan were he began to rebuild Al Qaeda. The Taliban went into hiding as US forces easily took control of Kabul and other major cities. Currently the US is still in the country fighting an insurgency set up by Taliban warlords. Fewer than 100 Al Qaeda fighters remain in Afghanistan, But US drone attacks around Islamabad Pakistan weaken Al Queda everyday. The US is winning the War on Terror, and now almost all of the United States resources heading for Afghanistan, because of Operation Iraqi Freedom coming to a close, which was a victory.
