If the Europeans never (practically) took over the world at one time or another, then you wouldn't see as much of a European influence. For example, maybe there wouldn't be larger European populations in the Americas and Australia, and Christianity wouldn't have the billions of followers it does today, and democracy wouldn't be as wide spread.
