There are a number of serious long-term effects that came about as a result of imperialism.

Infrastructure Underdevelopment: In most of the colonial possessions, the infrastructure was created to be only as effective as necessary for administration and the expropriation of raw materials. Many communities did not get (and many still lack) clean water, electricity, rail/highway access, sufficient amounts of food, etc. There are a large number of countries that were former colonies which lack the ability to effectively restrain or defeat rebellions in distant or remote areas, because of the lack of interconnectivity and infrastructure between regions.

Lack of Political Stability and Civil Society:Since the natives were not taught how to govern or allowed to organize within the colonial states, ineffective governments started, which lead to numerous coups and the disruption of political stability in many former colonies.

Lack of an Educated Population: The colonizers did not strive to properly develop the critical thinking populations of the colonized, creating a school system that focused on rote learning, if kids could even find a school to attend. The lack of education, makes it difficult for formerly colonized nations to move beyond traditional hatreds, invent creative solutions to their problems, and effectively promote their self-interests.

Racial/Tribal Issues: There were numerous tribal and regional issues prior to colonization. However, in a number of cases colonizers created ethic tensions were none had existed prior (Hutus and Tutsis) or inflamed ethnic conflicts that had simmered down (Yoruba and Hausa Fulani). These ethnic tensions were raised in order to divide and conquer the locals. However, these hatreds long outlived the colonizers and continue to effect these ethnic groups after independence. Additionally, since colonial borders had no regard to where different ethnic groups were, some cut ethnic groups in half and others put warring groups under the same authority. These border issues have not been rectified since imperialism.

Poverty: The expropriation of resources led to the impoverishment of the formerly colonized. Additionally, many other former colonies remain hopelessly in debt to their former colonizer.

China suffered immensely because of European Imperialism. But before that can be fully understood, the reasons that China was such an attraction must be discussed.

Here are some important reasons:

A. China's large population was a huge market for manufactured goods;

B. China could provide inexpensive labor to work in foreign owned enterprises;

C. China had untapped mineral resources that could be exploited by the higher tech industrialized nations of Europe;

D. China's raw silk and tea had marketability in Europe; and

E. China's Manchu government lacked power and was inefficient, thus was unable to force "fair trade".

The list of imperialists is full of the all the likely European suspects. They all had track records for exploiting underdeveloped nations for decades & decades. They even "owned" these nations and called them "colonies".

1. British Empire. By winning the Opium War of 1839-1842 they:

a. compelled China to allow imports of opium, a dangerous drug then and a dangerous drug now;

b. annexed Hong Kong;

c. created for themselves the privilege of extraterritoriality in Hong Kong; and

d. established a sphere of influence over the Yangtze River Valley.

2. French Empire.

a. annexed Indo-China; and

b. gained a sphere of influence in southeastern China.

3. Germany. Not quite a real overseas empire (they'd annex most of Europe later ) but in the mean time gained a sphere of influence over the Shangtung Peninsula.

4. Russia. Also not a super colonial power but as with Germany, they'd carve out one in eastern Europe later .. But in the mean time .....

a. annexed the Amur River district;

b. annexed the seaport of Vladivostok;

c. annexed the central Asian territory bordering Sinkiang Province;

d. secured a lease to Port Arthur; and

e. established a sphere of influence over iron ore rich Manchuria.

5. Japan. Japan was the new kid on the block so to speak. Later on would destroy most of China, Korea, southeast asia, and threaten the British Empire's pet project called India.

a. By winning the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95 annexed Taiwan;

b. in 1910 annexed Korea;

c. by winning the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05, Japan took over the Port Arthur lease; and

d. split up the Russian influence in Manchuria.

China was in danger based on all of the above, to me a dismembered nation. In summary the affects of imperialism were devastating to China.
