Because Australia is a democracy, his party (the Liberal Party of Australia) held the greatest number of federal seats in the House of Representatives. Because the party had elected him as their leader, he then became the Prime Minister.

Although Howard lost the 2007 election, before that he was seen as a shrewd, safe pair of hands with many years of experience both in power and in opposition. He reflected a large section of Australian public opinion.

One of the things John Howard did as Prime Minister was to safeguard Australia's economic future. He and treasurer Peter Costello set aside billions of dollars in a "Future Fund". This was then drawn upon by the ALP government that followed, to shore up Australia during the Global Financial Crisis.

Two other things which John Howard brought in during his tenure as Prime Minister, and for which he is particularly remembered were:

1. The GST or Goods & Services tax

2. The Immigration policy known as the Pacific Solution
