King George III did not surround himself with competent ministers. As a result, much of the trouble with the colonies can be traced to the ineptitude of his choices. George Grenville was the author of The Stamp Act and Lord Chatham was responsible for the Townshend Acts. As a result, he lost a good portion of his colonies in North America.
