∙ 7y agoFor all practical purposes, the Dred Scott decision by the US Supreme Court shocked may people and certainly angered many abolitionists. With that said, it was the South that "started" the US Civil War. And, the US Supreme Court in general terms sided with the Court's decision. It would then be a stretch to say it brought the US Civil War closer. This would be true if the Court had ruled in favor of Dred Scott. It should be noted that most men enlisted in the Union army to preserve the Union. Slavery became part of the war later on, however, except for newspapers and magazines, few enlisted men in the Union army risked life and limb to end slavery. This is not to say that Northerners favored slavery. Most were against slavery.

I would imagine very disappointed. He was told he was property, didn't have rights, and wasn't a citizen. He had to stay with his owner.

No. The decision outraged abolitionists, but abolitionists were only a very, very small percentage of the northern (and southern) population. Most people could not possibly have cared less about the fate of a single slave, or of any number of slaves. Do you get all worked up and want to go to war when the Court decides a case in a way you feel is unjust to one of the parties? Neither did people back then.
