American civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. grew up as the son of a pastor. His family background laid the foundation of his strong will to fight. Dr. King became actively involved in the Civil Rights Movement after he led a protest following the arrest of Rosa Parks in 1955. As he worked for equal rights for all across the country he became known as one of the icons in the fight leading to his famous I Have a Dream speech in Washington D.C.
Martin Luther King, Jr. grew up during the time when African-Americans were racially discriminated against. He experienced much of this first hand. These things stuck with him and led him to be an outstanding student who excelled academically. He was eventually taught by one teacher, Miss Lemon, that he could resist and rebel in a quiet manner while still getting his point across.
He, eventually, after many years of schooling, got his Doctorate and in 1957 helped establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and also became its president.
He lead many in protests against racial discrimination and was jailed 30 times for his resistance. On August 28,1963 MLK and some other leaders led a march of over 200,000 into Washington,D.C. Here he gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
He was even given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 but chose to give the $54,000 in award money to civil rights groups to help secure the rights of all African-Americans.
On April 4,1968 a gunman by the name of James Earl Ray assassinated Dr. King in Memphis, Tennessee.
Martin Luther King was always a leader. His father was a leader. In a time when Many African Americans did not go to college, he did at the age of 16. So, even if you put his background aside he was educated you add being a reverend and you have a man who was destine to be a leader. It was destiny. People knew it before he did they came to him for answers and he rose to the occasion like a natural born leader.
