Saw africans as less than human. Those few that felt a twinge in their conscience may have thought that the conditions they were under in America were better than the savage life they must have lead in darkest Africa. Probably would have looked into examples of the Jews in The Bible who often times owned slaves, would have used this as a justification. But remember that the south was in essence an aristocratic system, so the placement of slaves within the system would have been natural: slaves are simply another class, albeit below the commen folk. They didn't necessarily need justification (at least the wealthy slave owners didn't), but I'm sure knowing that they were "helping" the unfortunate creatures, and hat they were in their proper place let them sleep peacefully at night.
