Here in Europe FDR is remembered with respect and affection. Most people in Britain who're old or informed enough to remember or know about him admire him for his attempts to revive America's fortunes after the great depression, for his strong leadership during the Second World War and the subsequent liberation of Europe, and for the dignity he displayed in the face of his of his own physical challenges. While we know that many of the essentially Keynesian programs designed to rescutitate the prewar economy were ultimately unsuccessful, and that his poor health left him in a weakened position when negotiating the future of Europe with Stalin towards the end of the war, many feel that he represents the model of what an American can be: strong, fair, just and with a concern for the well-being of his fellow man. What a shame that recent American presidents have failed to live up to these ideals, and have shown no compunction about damage they have done to the USA's international reputation.
