There were local newspapers, especially around larger cities such as Boston and Philadelphia. These newspapers were quite efficient for their time. However, they were mostly political and any news coming over from Europe would take months to receive. Also, plain old word-of-mouth was very efficient in those days, even if not all information was very accurate.
