Gandhi's activism began in South Africa, where Indians were treated unfairly in the country's apartheid system He gradually acquired a following, who were amazed and encouraged by his non-violent methods. It should be noted that Gandhi would have been considered racist at the time. He believed in racial superiority and mainly began to protest because he didn't believe the Indians should be treated like the black people.

Gandhi was one of the greatest leaders India produced in the 20th century. His life was dedicated to the cause of India's freedom, and it can be said that he was the single most important freedom fighter who achieved freedom for India from the British. This is not to say that others did not play a role. They did, but Gandhi was greater than all the others put together because he carried the freedom struggle to the masses. Before his advent on the Indian political stage, the freedom struggle was confined to a handful of educated, city-dwelling Indians who learnt about democracy from the British, and who, while professing to be freedom fighters, did not really understand rural India and the people living there. Gandhi, through his various non-violent satyagrahas (civil disobedience movements), brought the concept of freedom to the Indian masses and made them understand the need and advantage of living in a free India. However, Gandhi realized that Indians needed to change themselves if they were to deserve and benefit from freedom. To this end, he initiated and encouraged several societal reforms like removal of untouchability, religious equality, education of women, morality and honesty among the citizens and so on. His life was an open book, for everyone to see and learn from. He hid nothing from others, because he had nothing to hide. He was more critical of himself than his worst cirtics and was humble enough to accept criticism from those who were much inferior to him in many ways. His dedicated service, his austerity, his almost obsessive honesty and truthfulness, his humility, and his moral purity raised him to the stature of a saint in the eyes of the Indian masses. He was hailed as the Mahatma (the great soul) and Bapu (father of the nation). His love for mankind, his unwavering adherence to non-violence made him dear to his own enemies - the British. Inspite of the fact that he was the most dangerous freedom fighter arraigned against them, they loved and respected him. Below is a brief description of his contribution to the cause of Indian freedom. Lastly, to answer your question: Did people like Gandhi? The answer is Yes. They may not have agreed with all that he stood for, they may have been frustrated by his "outdated" philosophy and his moral posturing, but no one could doubt his sincerity, genuiness, and spiritual greatness. His love was a very powerful magnet from which even his enemies and detractors could not escape. Brief history of Gandhi: Gandhi first employed non-violent civil disobedience as an expatriate lawyer in South Africa, in the resident Indian community's struggle for civil rights. After his return to India in 1915, he set about organising peasants, farmers, and urban labourers in protesting excessive land-tax and discrimination. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, for expanding women's rights, for building religious and ethnic amity, for ending untouchability, for increasing economic self-reliance, but above all for achieving Swaraj-the independence of India from foreign domination. Gandhi famously led Indians in protesting the British-imposed salt tax with the 400 km (249 mi) Dandi Salt March in 1930, and later in calling for the British to Quit India in 1942. He was imprisoned for many years, on numerous occasions, in both South Africa and India.
