∙ 12y agoThe political realisation that escalation beyond the will and means of the US would be needed to win the war seems to have come during and post the Tet Offensive of 1968. It is interesting that public opinion before the Tet Offensive was largely in favour of the war and actually peaked during the Tet Offensive only to fall away as confidence in President Johnson and is apparent inaction ate into the polls.
In my opinion the US was never really in a position to win against the North without a full and arduous prosecution of the war from the government in Saigon and the ARVN. Neither of which materialised despite of much training, backing and funding by the US.
