Various people, in various parts of the world, thought slavery was a bad thing, so agitated for it to be abolished, which took a long time. In the USA, it was abolished during Abraham Lincoln's presidency. It should be noted that in some parts of the world slavery still exists, in practice if not in name.

The Somersett's Case, which emancipated a slave in Britain, was a major part of what began the movement to abolish slavery. After the American Revolutionary War, an anti-slavery movement began in the British public. In 1833, the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 abolished slavery throughout the British Empire, with the exceptions of three territories. In 1843, those territories could no longer participate in the slave trade.

The Thirteenth Amendment, which was ratified at the end of 1865, abolished all slavery in the United States.
