In the early part of the US Civil War, the Confederacy made good use of its slaves. Because the South's number of available men for troops were far less than the North, the South used slaves to accompany their armies and do the manual work that was doe by soldiers in the North. So carrying ammunition, driving supply carts and cooking food, was done with slaves. This allowed the South to use its white manpower as soldiers. Also, before the North began to make serious inroads in the South, farming duties were carried out by slaves. In the North, free workmen were used and therefore left fewer men for the North's armies.

For the most part, the Confederacy pressed slaves into service in the Southern armies to save work usually done by soldiers. This entailed such duties as tending to supplies and carry ammunition. It is a small reason why troop counts in Southern armies were not accurate.
