Because they were the government of the colonies. That's what governments tend to do.

More specifically, Britain was nearly bankrupt. The Seven Years War (the French and Indian War was a small part of this much larger war) was horrendously expensive- during the war, Britain not only paid for their own armies and navies and such, but they also paid for a lot of their allies as well, mainly Prussia's. Prussia was a small country that is now in northeastern Germany and didn't have the money to fight a long war against powerful countries like France, Russia or Austria (Austria was a lot bigger and stronger back then)- so Britain helped.

Thus, when the war finally ended, Britain needed money to make up for all that they had spent during the conflict. God, people learn this stuff. Pay attention in class.*whispers to self* Morons
