One failed attempt was the establishment of Fort Caroline by French Huguenots, not welcome in Catholic France, and led by Jean Ribault. They were captured and murdered by the Spanish Admiral Menedez, but other French came to North America later and established a presence in Quebec and Louisiana which has lasted to the present day.

The French have never owned the United States of America, but they have owned great areas of land that were later bought by the US, and made a part of the US.

They "owned" those great areas of land by moving into it and claiming it as theirs.
